Subaru Concept Holds Clues for the Next WRX
When the Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept
went on display at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, it didn’t receive too
much fanfare. But it’s certainly worth a second look considering that is
may be the inspiration for the next-generation WRX.
According to Motor Trend, the concept “was actually an early
look” at Subaru’s upcoming sporty hatchback. The magazine’s sources
suggested that the Advanced Tourer’s front fascia would be carried over
to the next WRX, while its aggressive stance would also be mimicked to
match the personality of Subaru’s rally-bred racer.
Naturally, the Advanced Tourer features a horizontally-opposed Subaru
boxer engine along with a symmetrical all-wheel drive system. The
powertain also includes a single, lightweight electric motor that allows
the driver to use electric power alone during start-ups and low-speed
drives.
Other features found in the concept include a monitor built into the
steering wheel that enables access to navigation, video and Web-based
apps, as well as an updated version of Subaru’s EyeSight video warning
system.
Although this hybrid-boxer-wagon appears to give clues as to what the next WRX will look like, one thing you shouldn’t count on is the “Impreza” name. Subaru is reportedly looking to differentiate the WRX and distance itself from the Impreza line.
Look for the new Subaru WRX sometime in 2015. According to MT, it’s safe to expect around 320 horsepower thanks to a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.
